The Porsche Taycan will debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but YouTube channel Fully Charged has already gotten the opportunity to climb behind the wheel of Stuttgart's first-ever electric car.
This wasn't your average first drive, either. Fully Charged host Richard Llewellyn was tasked with performing multiple, back-to-back 0–200 km/h acceleration runs in the car to prove that its powertrain can be pushed to its limits without overheating or fading.
Not surprisingly, the Taycan passed with flying colours. It tallied up 26 0–200 km/h acceleration runs in a row, all of which clocked in at under 10 seconds. Additionally, just 0.8s separated the fastest and slowest runs – impressive considering this doesn't appear to have been a very tightly controlled test and Llewellyn is not a professional driver.
According to Llewellyn, the car he was driving was a prototype for the range-topping Taycan, which he predicts will cost around $120,000 USD, or just under $160,000 CAD. Less expensive versions with less power and range are expected to be offered as well, though it's not clear if they will be available from launch.
Porsche says this performance-focused model will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in "significantly less than 3.5 seconds" and will top out at over 250 km/h. It makes 591 horsepower from its dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain and features a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It also has an 800V electrical system, enabling extremely short DC fast-charging times.
