GMC has just announced that the return of the Hummer brand will happen later this year. The company will be showing off a new electric truck during the Super Bowl this weekend, and the specs so far look more massive than an H2 grille in your rear-view mirror.
1,000 horsepower is the number that the Hummer EV is touting, and it's impossible for that figure to not grab your attention, especially since it uses battery power and not the gas or diesel power of the previous iterations of the big off-roader.
To go with that power is an even more impressive 11,500 lb-ft of torque, but before you worry about touching the accelerator and reversing the earth's rotation, we should clarify something about the big torque numbers EVs use. While most conventional cars use power measured at the engine's output shaft (or electric motor output shaft), some EVs use a figure calculated at the wheels. Tesla initially advertised the Model 3 as having 7,000 lb-ft (10,000 N-m), for example, but the conventional figure was in the 400s. It takes advantage of the vehicle's gears, so using the same math a conventional Jeep with low range could offer more than 30,000 lb-ft. It's likely still a massive torque figure, but we believe it to be a wheel figure, so not as extraordinary as it sounds. We'll update if General Motors says otherwise.
No matter how you measure it, GMC says it will hit 100 km/h in three seconds, which is impressively quick no matter how big the Hummer EV ends up being.
Our first look at the GMC Hummer EV will be during the second quarter of the Super Bowl this weekend, though GMC will also take over YouTube's homepage tomorrow. GMC says the big game ad will show the expected performance and capability.
The Hummer brand, which GM went big on with the H2 in 2002 and later H3, ended in 2009 as a result of the recession. It was known for big, brash, loud, and fuel-hungry vehicles. An EV that is big, brash, quiet, and sips electrons is quite the turnaround.
GM has announced that its Hamtramck facility near Detroit is being converted to become the company's first EV-only production site. The company is spending U.S. $2.2 billion to convert the facility, currently home to Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Impala to build electric trucks, with the new Hummer EV to be among the vehicles built there.
The full reveal of the GMC Hummer EV pickup truck will be May 20. No word on if Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was famously an ambassador of the original Hummer but has now also converted to electric power, will be involved.
