Hyundai has confirmed the upcoming Elantra N Line, a sportier version of the Korean automaker’s compact sedan.
Hyundai recently debuted an entirely new Elantra with completely overhauled styling, and the N Line variant will add a turbocharged engine, chassis upgrades, and sporty design elements. The car in the photos Hyundai shared is currently covered up in camouflage prior to its debut, but the new design could lend itself well to a performance-oriented model. In the teaser video below, you can also hear the Elantra N Line roaring around, so driving enthusiasts will be happy about the sedan’s increased personality.
Where the Hyundai Veloster N is currently the only full-blown N model available in Canada, N Line models are an in-between option for drivers who want more performance than a base model but perhaps don’t need something as hardcore (kind of like the BMW M340 versus the M3).
The 2021 Hyundai Elantra N Line will replace the Elantra Sport that’s currently on sale, so this will be the first time the Elantra sedan will get an N Line model. The regular Elantra will be powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, getting power to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). We expect the Elantra N Line to have a version of the powertrain the current Sport model uses, a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. This model was offered in a single, well-equipped trim and came with a standard six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission (DCT), so we can expect the same from the upcoming N Line variant.
The Elantra GT, which is the hatchback version, is currently available with an N Line package, but there are rumours that the hatchback might be discontinued because it never got the styling refresh the sedan did. We have asked Hyundai Canada for confirmation on the GT’s future and are awaiting their response.
The normal 2021 Hyundai Elantra arrives in late 2020 and the N Line model should be here shortly after that to compete with cars like the Honda Civic Si or Volkswagen GTI.
