The longest-range Toyota Prius, the plug-in hybrid Prime, is getting a boost this year. For 2021 comes the addition of Android Auto, some new driver aids for the higher-spec cars, and the smallest of price increases adding $160 to the car's MSRP for the new year.
The Prius Prime is the model that can run up to 40 km on its battery charge before the gas engine kicks in, or up to 135 km/h on electrons (though probably not in the same trip). With the 1.8L electric motor coming on, the Prius Prime can do up to 1,035 km on a tank and charge, Toyota says.
On the Prime base model, now starting from $33,150, Android Auto is a welcome addition to Apple CarPlay, which was there last year. There's also smart key with push-button start and a 120V power outlet new on the base car, giving you some kit for your cash.
The Prius Prime Upgrade sees a price increase of $1,000 to $35,990 but adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert to Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. For a few dollars more (only $350 more than last year), the Technology package has a new alloy design but comes with carry-over features like a 10-speaker JBL audio system, parking assist, and head-up display.
The 2021 Toyota Prius Prime and its Prius on hybrid steroids styling is available now at Toyota dealers coast to coast.
