Jeep is going far out with a new overlander concept based on the Jeep Gladiator and the extra long range that its new diesel engine allows. This new concept is called the Farout and it takes inspiration from the Wayout Easter Jeep Safari concept that the brand showed off last year, making this a go-anywhere camper that will go even further on a tank of fuel.
Built around the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6-equipped Gladiator pickup that will be available later this year and its 8.4 L/100 km highway fuel economy rating, Jeep has turned this into a serious overlanding rig. The showcase is the customized roof tent. It folds into a mostly flat box for storage and driving, then pops up into a 229-cm tall, nearly 490-mm long tent. Jeep says it will comfortably sleep four, high off of the cold, hard, and often wet ground.
“Although we didn’t get to celebrate in Moab this year with our latest round of concept vehicles, we’re pleased to introduce the Jeep Farout concept today as a vehicle that blends Gladiator EcoDiesel’s fuel efficiency with an area of features fans of overlanding will love,” said Jim Morrison, Head of Jeep Brand.
Under that rear cap is the rest of what you need for camping. A wood-lined interior has ambient lighting as well as a fridge and stove along with hanging storage racks, chairs, and table space. The pickup cab is customized with dark smoke blue leather and flannel seat inserts.
That exterior paint is a new colour Jeep calls Earl, finished with chartreuse accents. To complete the Jeep's overlanding credentials, Farout has a 2.0-inch Jeep Performance lift kit with Fox performance shocks. It also has a 12,000 lb Warn winch, custom rock rails front and rear, and 37-inch mud-terrain tires.
Like most of Jeep's concepts, this one won't be coming to a dealership, but we bet you'll be able to build it from an aftermarket catalogue before too long.
Lastly, FCA stablemate Ram told us this week when we can expect to first see their answer to Ford's Raptor, the Ram 1500 TRX. The high-performance off-road pickup will be revealed next Monday, August 17, in an online unveiling.
