Maserati MC20 Supercar Debuts, Electric Version Coming in 2022

The last new product released by Maserati was the Levante crossover. While the Levante was exactly the kind of product the Italian manufacturer needed to succeed in this crossover-crazy market, we're happy to see the manufacturer has returned to its sporting roots with the debut of the new MC20 supercar.

The Maserati MC20, which debuted during a live-streamed event held in Italy this week, is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 engine producing 621 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. The 90-degree turbo V6 sends power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, enabling a 0-96 km/h (60 mph) time of just 2.9 seconds. With the throttle buried, the MC20 will keep on accelerating all the way to 325 km/h (202 mph).

Like many other new supercars, the Maserati MC20 is based around a carbon-fiber monocoque platform. Developed in conjunction with Italian race car manufacturer Dallara, the innovative chassis contributes to the coupe's low curb weight of just 1,469 kilograms (3,240 lbs). With underbody aerodynamics and carefully placed intake vents, the MC20 is devoid of many of the aggressive vents, scoops and strakes that adorn so many other supercars these days, contributing to a tidy, uncluttered exterior appearance.

This might be a supercar but in 2020, even the most driver-focused vehicles have to be stuffed with technology. The MC20 delivers in this regard, featuring a standard 10-inch digital driver's display, a 10-inch central infotainment screen, an Amazon Alexa AI assistant, and onboard wi-fi.

The most exciting part about the Maserati MC20, though, is what's to come. The Italian manufacturer is also working on a battery-electric version with all-wheel-drive. Details are scarce at the moment, but we know the EV will be even faster than the combustion engine model pictured here and will have an estimated range of around 375 kilometres. A convertible will eventually join the hardtop model at a later date, as well.

The Maserati MC20 is a 2022 model year vehicle, so it should go on sale in Italy and elsewhere in Europe sometime next year. Canadians will likely have to wait a little bit longer than Europeans to get their hands on the car, but the North American launch shouldn't be too far behind. Pricing is not available at this time.
