The next-generation 2022 Hyundai Tucson has made its official debut, arriving with contemporary looks, available hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and even the promise of a sporty N Line model.
Accounting for nearly 7 million sales since its introduction back in 2004, the Hyundai Tucson has become one of the Korean automaker's most important models. This next-generation version aims to attract customers with radical exterior styling that incorporates a new "parametric grille," as Hyundai calls it, with "half-mirror type daytime running lamps." These DRLs are seamlessly integrated into the grille and can only be seen when illuminated. Similarly, the full-width taillamp incorporates "half-hidden triangular shapes" that are only visible when lit.
Inside, the Tucson features a spacious cabin that is designed to provide a feeling of "openness and serenity," Hyundai says. The vertically-oriented centre console flows into a dual 10.25-inch full-touch screen array, which is joined by a single digital driver's display. The Tucson will also boast 38.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the second-row seats, putting it in the upper echelon of the segment with regard to storage space.
The base engine in next-generation Tucson models will be a 2.5-litre four-cylinder producing 187 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque. A turbocharged 1.6-litre hybrid model will also be available, which will make 226 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Models with the 2.5L engine will come with an eight-speed automatic, while 1.6L hybrid models will feature CVT. A plug-in hybrid powertrain will eventually be offered, too, but Hyundai isn't sharing details at this time.
This is a crossover, so naturally, Hyundai's HTRAC all-wheel-drive system will also be offered. Just like on the previous model, the powertrain and AWD system will come with configurable drive Eco, Comfort, Smart, Sport drive modes, but these will now also be joined by Mud, Sand and Snow traction settings in some markets. Hyundai didn't say if this would include Canada, though we'd have to assume so given our wintery climate and outdoorsy past times.
A sporty Tucson N Line model will also be arriving soon, though Hyundai refrained from sharing information or photos this week. We do know the Tucson N Line will be available globally, however, whereas it was previously only offered in Europe.
The new Hyundai Tucson will go on sale in Korea in September as a 2021 model year vehicle. Canadian sales will begin alongside U.S. sales in the first half of 2021 as a 2022 model year. Canadian-specific pricing and model availability will be announced at a later date.
