The highly anticipated Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover has been unveiled ahead of its arrival in Canada early next year.
The ID.4 will be available with two different powertrains in Canada. The base rear-wheel-drive model is good for 201 hp, while the all-wheel-drive setup will churn out 301 hp. Both models will feature an 82 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which will be able to charge from 5 per cent capacity to 80 per cent capacity in under 40 minutes when hooked up to a DC fast charging station.
Official range figures are not yet available, but VW estimates certain ID.4 models will be able to travel up to 400 km on a single charge (or 500 km on the more generous WLTP cycle).
The Volkswagen ID.4 is able to achieve such impressive pure electric range figures partially due to its extremely low drag co-efficient of 0.23. VW says the crossover's styling looks as though it was "shaped by the wind itself," and consists of a flowing, minimalist passenger compartment and streamlined rear end.
We've had previously seen the interior of the VW ID.4 after the automaker released an image showing the EV's dashboard earlier this month. The minimalist interior is described as "flowing and lightweight" and features a horizontally mounted central infotainment screen, along with a small digital driver's display behind the steering wheel.
The ID.4 will also come well-equipped for Canadian winters, boasting standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel and windshield. Other standard features include 19-inch wheels, a satellite navigation system, front and rear parking sensors, a wireless phone charging pad and cloth seats.
The optional Statement package will get buyers some new equipment in the way of leatherette seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, power tailgate, 20-inch wheels, a bi-colour exterior theme with a black roof and premium exterior and interior lighting.
The VW ID.4 will be the first battery-electric production crossover from the German brand. The ID.4, along with the closely related ID.3 hatchback for Europe and other foreign markets, spearhead the automaker's Transform 2025+” strategy, which will see it invest 11 billion euros (over $17 million CAD) in electric mobility through to 2024.
