Acura has provided us with a sneak peek of its new 2022 MDX crossover ahead of the three-row family hauler's debut next week.
This shadowy new teaser image of the 2022 Acura MDX shows off the vehicle's diamond-shaped grille, "jewel eye" headlamps and creased hood. It's a bit odd for the Japanese automaker to release a teaser image for the next-generation MDX, though, as we already know what it will look like thanks to the 2022 Acura MDX Prototype that debuted late last month, which is pictured below.
The Acura MDX Prototype has a similar silhouette and overall shape to the current Acura MDX, but has more intricate styling that's intended to evoke a "dynamic and muscular" vibe. The prototype's wide-set stance, large 21-inch wheels and dual-tip exhaust also lend themselves to the vehicle's sportier aura.
Enabling this wider, muscular exterior appearance is an all-new light truck platform that integrates a more sophisticated double-wishbone front suspension design. This new platform and advanced suspension setup should help give the next-generation MDX a more refined ride and some added poise in the corners over the current model.
The MDX Prototype's interior provides a clear indication of what to expect from the production model, as well. The crossover features a large 12.3-inch digital driver's display, as well as 12.3-inch centre display - the latter of which is the largest infotainment display ever fitted to an Acura vehicle. Other standout interior features include two-tone leather upholstery, ambient lighting and a 25-speaker ELS audio system. Like virtually every other new vehicle that hits the market these days, the MDX will also offer a wide range of standard and available active safety technologies.
Under the hood will be Acura's 3.5-litre V6 engine, which will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. A sporty MDX Type S model will join the range later on in 2021 and will come standard with 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 producing 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. These Type S models will also come standard with all-wheel-drive.
"Acura will reveal the boldly redesigned 2022 Acura MDX on Dec. 8," the Japanese automaker said in a statement. "As the brand’s new flagship model, MDX delivers on the styling, performance and technology showcased in the MDX Prototype."
