The official debut of the new Mercedes-Benz EQS battery-electric sedan is just a few weeks out, but the German automaker has now decided to whet our appetites a bit by publishing the first official images of the vehicle's svelte exterior and tech-laden interior.
As we can see from these images, the four-door EQS will adopt a coupe-like shape and will have extremely short front and rear overhangs. The design will also be much tidier and more minimalist than other current Mercedes vehicles, featuring smoothed-over body panels with a simple and streamlined look. With the introduction of the EQS, "body creases have had their day at Mercedes-Benz," the automaker proclaims.
This aerodynamically enhanced exterior will have a direct effect on the range of the Mercedes-Benz EQS. With a drag coefficient of just 0.20 (a 0.04 point improvement over the Tesla Model S), the EQS will be one the most aerodynamic production vehicles on the market once it goes on sale in Canada in the not-too-distant future, helping it maximize the charge from its lithium-ion battery.
The cabin of the EQS, meanwhile, adopts the automaker's new MBUX Hyperscreen. This pillar-to-pillar widescreen combines several different displays under a single glass panel that spans 141 cm and curves around the vehicle's interior. The Hyperscreen will be optional equipment in the EQS, however, with the base model adopting a smaller (though still quite large) centre display screen and a slightly different centre console layout as a result. An optional MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment Plus system will be available, too, which comprises two 29.4-cm displays with touch controls on the backrests of the driver's and front passenger's seats.
Like most current Mercedes vehicles, the MBUX Hyperscreen will also adopt the latest version of the "Hey Mercedes," virtual assistant. This onboard AI system allows the user to control and adjust a wide variety of vehicle settings by simply saying "Hey Mercedes," followed by a voice command. Passengers will be able to relay instructions to the AI assistant from the backseat, as well. In general "rear passengers experience the same comprehensive infotainment and comfort offerings as the driver and front passenger," in the EQS, Mercedes says.
The EQS will also come with an abundance of other high-end features, including a pollution-filtering HEPA filter, active fragrancing, and a 15-speaker Burmester audio system.
The Mercedes-Benz EQS will be built alongside the S-Class and the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class at the luxury brand's Sindelfingen plant in Germany. Details on the vehicle's Canadian pricing and availability will be announced following its official debut in the coming weeks.
