Lexus LF-Z Concept Previews Future Electric Luxury Crossover

The Lexus LF-Z Concept just made its official debut, previewing a future electric crossover from the Japanese luxury brand that will go on sale in 2025.

Lexus says the LF-Z Concept utilizes a dedicated electric vehicle platform with the battery assembly mounted longitudinally in the vehicle's floor, giving it a low centre of gravity for improved driving feel and handling. The electric crossover also features a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system dubbed "DIRECT4" that can actively switch between front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or AWD depending on the current driving situation, further enhancing the vehicle’s overall agility.

Inside, the LF-Z has an open and airy interior design that Lexus refers to as a “Tazuna cockpit.” The cabin incorporates a low dashboard design with a head-up display and steering wheel-mounted infotainment controls, negating the need for the driver to take their eyes off the road whilst behind the wheel. A large panoramic moonroof expands on the vehicle’s lightweight cabin design and is joined by other creature comforts like an onboard AI system, massage function seats, and an available Mark Levinson premium audio system.

Lexus says the LF-Z indicates where its future styling direction is headed, taking the shape of its head-turning "spindle" grille and applying the same design philosophy across the entire vehicle. Lexus does not refer to the LF-Z as a crossover, though, and like many other new EVs, the concept appears to be bridging the gap between a traditional hatchback or liftback sedan and a crossover.

Lexus says it will offer a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric version of every vehicle it produces by 2025 and expects the sales of these electrified models to outpace its gasoline vehicles within the same timeframe. So while it’s not clear if the production version of the LF-Z will arrive in Canada one day, it still serves as a good indication of what we can expect from the brand in the coming years.
