Mercedes-Benz has introduced a mid-cycle update for the style-forward CLS sedan with new exterior styling and a mildly revised interior.
Just like the current model, the updated 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLS will be offered in two trim levels in Canada: the entry-level CLS 450 4Matic and the performance-focused CLS 53 AMG.
The CLS 450 receives a redesigned grille with a new three-dimensional star pattern and a new lower bumper with a gloss black inlay accent. All Canadian-spec CLS 450 models will also receive the AMG Exterior Styling package as standard, which includes a sportier front fascia design with different vertical air intakes.
The CLS 53 AMG, meanwhile, gets a completely redesigned front end denoted by the AMG grille with vertical bars. Models equipped with the optional AMG Night Package or AMG Exterior Carbon Package also get side mirrors finished in either high-gloss black or carbon fibre.
The styling updates for the 2022 CLS might not seem like much, but Mercedes says the design is the reason most frequently cited by customers for buying the CLS, so it's crucial that the vehicle's styling stays fresh.
From a mechanical standpoint, this luxurious four-door remains unchanged from the pre-update variant. the CLS 450 4Matic has a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six as standard, which is good for 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. These models are capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and are electronically limited to 210 km/h.
The CLS 53 AMG gets the same turbo inline-six but pairs it with a 48V integrated starter–generator that can briefly deliver an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The combined system output for the CLS 53 AMG is 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, helping it hustle from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The top speed of this model is also limited to 210 km/h, but can be raised to 250 km/h with the optional AMG Driver’s Package equipped.
Both the CLS 450 4Matic and CLS 53 AMG come standard with the automaker’s 4Matic all-wheel drive system and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The AMG gets a more advanced version of the 4Matic system called 4Matic+, which is tuned with sporty driving in mind and can send up to 100 per cent of the vehicle’s torque to the rear wheels.
Inside, both versions of the sedan have received a new Napa-leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel. The CLS 450 gets two new available trim options in the way of brown open-pore walnut or grey high-gloss wood, while the leather upholstery is now available in either Neva Grey/Magma Grey or Nut Brown/Black.
The updated 2021 Mercedes-Benz CLS 450 and CLS 53 AMG will arrive at Canadian dealerships this fall. Information on pricing and fuel economy will be released closer to its on-sale date.
