All-Electric Genesis G80 Luxury Sedan Debuts

Genesis has just revealed its first all-electric model. The Electrified Genesis G80 debuted at Auto Shanghai 2021, offering a 500-km range, all-wheel drive, 800V charging, and the ability to power appliances and other electrics at up to 3.6 kW.

From the outside, the Electrified G80 looks much like its gas-powered sibling, including the Genesis signature twin bar head, side, and taillights. The biggest exterior changes are at the nose where in place of the open mesh grille of the gas G80 is a filled-in Crest Grille, which Genesis says improves aerodynamic efficiency. The charging door is integrated into that grille and Genesis says it's invisible when closed.

A pair of electric motors (one front, one rear) make 182 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque for a combined max output of 364 hp and 516 lb-ft per the brand's global press release. Exact Canadian spec details will follow later in the year. The system switches automatically between two and all-wheel drive for maximum efficiency.

Genesis projects a range of more than 500 km on the optimistic European NEDC test cycle, though Canadian estimates will likely be closer to 427 km. The G80 gets a 400V/800V rapid charging system that allows charging at either of those ultra-fast charging stations with 350 kW charging allowing a 10 to 80 per cent charge in 22 minutes. Vehicle to Load allows you to plug in up to 3,600 kW of electronics to the G80 to work as a temporary mobile generator or simply to add convenience.

To help quiet the Electrified G80, Genesis has added Active Noise Control-Road, a system that analyzes road sounds to help cancel them out. It will also have Electronic Control Suspension with Road Preview, and an adaptive system that uses a front-facing camera to help smooth the ride.

Inside, the Electrified G80 adds sustainable materials including natural and recycled materials like recycled wood for the interior trim, recycled plastic bottle fabrics, and leather made with natural dyes.

Genesis says more information, including the on-sale date and complete North American specs, will come later this year.
