The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross SUV has made its North American debut ahead of its Canadian market arrival later this year.
The Toyota Corolla Cross slots in between the subcompact Toyota CH-R and compact Toyota RAV4 in the Japanese automaker’s lineup and promises to deliver the same everyday practicality and unwavering reliability as the sedan it shares its front-wheel drive-based platform with.
Powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, the Corolla Cross produces 169 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive with Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Control system, which can direct up to 50 per cent of power to the rear wheels, is available for a premium. Front-wheel drive models feature torsion beam rear suspension, while all-wheel drive variants have a more sophisticated multi-link setup for better handling and ride quality.
Inside, the Corolla Cross will offer an available 7-inch digital driver’s display, along with an available 8-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The available Audio Plus multimedia package will add a bit more technology to the mix, including a nine-speaker JBL audio system and an onboard Amazon Alexa AI assistant.
Toyota’s Safety Sense suite of active safety tech will come standard as well, which includes a pre-collision warning system, lane departure alert, and automatic high beams, among other equipment.
The Toyota Corolla Cross will be available in three trim levels from launch, including L, LE, and XLE. The LE and XLE trims have additional standard features, including a wireless charging pad and two USB charging ports for rear seat passengers.
Production of the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross will take place at the automaker’s new plant in Huntsville, Ala. We’re still awaiting specific Canadian-market details, such as pricing, trim availability, and fuel economy figures, though we expect more information to surface between now and its official arrival later this year.
