It is a few months later than expected, but the 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) is now at Canadian dealers, starting just under $45,000. The PHEV crossover offers an electric-only driving range of more than 50 km and while it is at dealers now, the official Canadian debut happens at the Montreal EV show this weekend.
The Kia Sorento PHEV arrives as a 2022 model, though it is the same chassis and styling as the gas version that arrived for 2021. The PHEV model gets a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder that is combined with a 13.8-kWh battery and 66-kW electric motor. The powertrain offers 261 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. More importantly for plug-in buyers, it has an estimated 51 km of electric range and an estimated fuel economy of 2.8 L/100 km city and 3.2 highway. All PHEV models come with standard all-wheel drive.
The 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV will start from $44,995 for the EX model, with EX+ and SX trims also available. That makes the EX model $5,000 more than the gas-only SUV, but it should qualify for a $2,500 federal incentive as well as provincial PHEV incentives.
A conventional hybrid will also be available later this year, powered by a 1.6L turbo four-cylinder making 227 hp. Fuel economy for that model is estimated at 6.4 L/100 km city and 7.0 highway, which Kia says is comparable to the much smaller Forte sedan. Pricing has not yet been set for that version of the crossover.
