The 2022 GMC Sierra has been refreshed with a wider front grille, an improved off-road package, and a luxurious new flagship model, bolstering the brand's best-selling lineup.
We'll get back to the luxury versions of the truck, though, and start with the changes that you'll find on the more accessible models. The Sierra SLE and higher trims will get new interiors that boost the truck's luxury levels, even when compared with the new Yukon (they'll all get new grilles and headlights as well). A 13.4-inch screen replaces the tiny screen in the old trucks, and a 12.3-inch digital dashboard is also standard on the SLE and up. A column shifter and front bench are still offered, but if you get front bucket seats, the truck will come with an electronic shifter.
The new infotainment system gets Google built-in (on all models except the base truck) that adds Google Maps, Assistant, and the Play store to the home screen, though use will require a subscription. Wireless versions of both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are on the SLE and up.
Engine changes will include more torque for the 2.7L High Output turbocharged four-cylinder, now making 420 lb-ft (up from 348 lb-ft). A new block and crankshaft add smoothness, GMC says, and offers a 4,264-kg (9,400-lb) tow rating for 5x4 models. The 3.0L Duramax diesel can now be fitted with the Max Tow package, boosting its top towing capability by 1,814 kg (4,000 lbs) to 5,987 kg (13,200 lbs or 13,000 for the 4x4 model). The 5.3L and 6.2L V8s continue unchanged, with all V8s and the diesel getting a 10-speed automatic transmission.
GM's Super Cruise will be available and adds the ability to drive hands-free with a trailer, though the lane-change function does not work with a trailer attached. The Sierra will also offer 14 camera views and new for trailering this year, an alert meant to tell you if your maximum weight has been exceeded
The AT4X off-road trim offering the 6.2L V8 as standard is new to the Sierra. For trail running, it has a 50-mm front and 25-mm rear lift, along with Multimatic DSSV dampers. Those are the magic Canadian shocks that give the Colorado ZR2 its off-road capability and also gave the Camaro ZL1 1LE its track prowess. A tow-speed transfer case is standard, as is one-pedal off-road Terrain Mode. Front and rear locking differentials, Goodyear mud-terrain tires, and a larger transfer case cover are included with rock-sliders optional. The ATX4 has a special obsidian leather interior with white piping and red stitching.
The Denali Ultimate is the trim GMC is showcasing, starting with the 6.2L V8. It will come with Super Cruise as standard along with GMC's carbon fibre bed, but it goes much further. An Alpine Umber interior features a leather-trimmed dash and door panels with a microsuede headliner up above. 16-way power-adjustable massage seats and a 12-speaker Bose system are included.
Real open-pore wood means each truck is slightly unique. Setting the Ultimate apart from the rest just that little bit extra is the Denali topographic inlay on the dashboard's wood as well as in the lather on the front and rear of the front seats and the rear door panels.
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is set to hit dealers in the first quarter of next year. Pricing has yet to be announced, but expect most trims to be within a few thousand of the 2021 model truck.
