Sporty Hyundai Elantra N and Kona N Priced Under $40,000

Hyundai today announced prices for the two newest additions to its N performance vehicle lineup. The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N compact sport sedan starts at $37,199, and the 2022 Hyundai Kona N – the brand’s first-ever performance crossover model – comes in at $39,999 (before taxes and fees). Both vehicles will begin arriving in Canadian showrooms later this month.

As we’ve previously detailed, the Elantra N and Kona N both use a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 276 hp and 289 lb-ft of torque, but can crank out 286 hp in overboost mode.

In the Elantra N, the $37,199 price includes a six-speed manual transmission, while an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic is available for another $1,600. The dual-clutch is standard in the $39,999 Kona N. Both new N models come exclusively with front-wheel drive and an electronic limited-slip differential.

The Elantra N and Kona N expand Hyundai’s high-performance offerings to three as they join the Veloster N, which carries over unchanged from 2021.

The Kona N is arguably the more significant of the two new models, being the first performance-oriented subcompact crossover from a mainstream automaker. The only other small SUVs that boast track-friendly powertrain and suspension setups are the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 and 45, and the BMW X2 M35i, both of which are priced well over $50,000.

Among the standard features in the Elantra N and Kona N are dual 10.25-inch screens, one of which handles infotainment duties while the other functions as a digital gauge cluster. Both cars get contoured front seats, but those in the Elantra are more aggressively bolstered. Other differences include the Elantra N’s electronically controlled suspension, which is not included in the Kona.

Hyundai will also equip every Elantra N or Kona N with its SmartSense suite of safety features, which comprises forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, blind spot and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, rear parking sensors, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, automatic high beams, and driver attention warning.
