History/Overview
The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover. It was redesigned into a fourth generation in 2019, and is BMW's oldest utility vehicle nameplate, having been introduced in the late 1990s.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
For 2020, the uplevel xDrive50i is renamed M50i; it also gets a new, more powerful engine that adds 67 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque for new totals of 523 hp and 553 lb-ft.
Available Trims
The M50i is the posher, more potent of two variants with its 4.4L turbo V8. The entry level is the xDrive40i, which uses a turbocharged six-cylinder engine.
Both models are standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
Standard Features
Outside, the X5 xDrive40i sports 20-inch wheels and run-flat tires, satin aluminum exterior trim, a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming side mirrors, adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams, and LED fog lights.
Inside, there's a leather sport steering wheel, transmission shift paddles, leatherette dashboard trim, automatic climate control, heated front seats, ambient lighting, satellite radio, connected drive services, Apple CarPlay, gesture control, and a black headliner.
Safety kit includes tire pressure monitoring, an alarm system, active protection, the driving assistant suite of active safety features, forward collision warning with city-speed automatic braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, rear collision prevention and speed limit information.
The M50i adds 22-inch wheels with non-run-flat tires, a tire repair kit, M Sport brakes, an adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential, adaptive M suspension, and aluminum interior trim.
Key Options
A premium package adds an integrated garage door opener, passive keyless entry, soft-close doors, side sunshades, heated and cooled cupholders, lumbar support, rear heated seats, four-zone climate control, and a head-up display. An enhanced premium group adds laserlight headlights, a travel and comfort system, parking assistant with surround view cameras, wireless smartphone charging, and a WiFi hotspot. BMW will also add air suspension to this package.
A premium excellence package adds panoramic sunroof, ventilated/massaging seats, steering and lane control, evasion assist, front cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, and active cruise control with stop-and-go.
Other packages include an off-road group, an M Sport pack, and a comfort handling bundle.
Fuel Economy
BMW's fuel consumption estimates for the X5 are 11.7/9.1 L/100 km (city/highway) in xDrive40i trim, and 14.5/10.7 L/100 km for the M50i.

BMW's competition for the X5 includes the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, the Lincoln Nautilus, Volvo's XC90, the Jaguar F-Pace, Audi's Q7, the Acura MDX, the Lexus RX, and Infiniti's QX60.
