The Chevrolet Equinox crossover is transformed into an all-new third-generation model for 2018, with updated styling, a lighter structure that cuts 180 kg from the curb weight and a trio of turbo engines that includes the segment's first diesel.
Positioned a cross-segment model sized and priced to compete with both compact and mid-sized crossovers, the Equinox was overdue for a redesign. The combination of less weight and the promise of improved fuel efficiency will be welcome here, as the outgoing model was known as a thirsty vehicle for its size.
Aiding in the weight reduction is a physically smaller body: the new design is smaller than last year's car, with a 4,652-mm overall length measurement (nearly 120 mm shorter than last year) and a wheelbase about 130 mm shorter.
For the first time, the Equinox gets an all-four-cylinder engine lineup: base power is from a 1.5L that makes 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, and the upgrade is a 2.0L good for 252 hp and 260 lb-ft. That new diesel is a 1.6L makes just 136 hp but cranks out 236 lb-ft.
A six-speed automatic transmission comes with the 1.5- and 1.6L engines, while the 2.0L gets a new nine-speed auto that will be shared with the Malibu sedan. Front- and all-wheel drive will both be available.
GM's estimated combined fuel consumption figures are 5.9 L/100 km for the diesel, 7.6 L/100 with the 1.5L and 8.4 L/100 km in models powered by the 2.0L.
Inside, there's a new "kneeling" rear seat that drops down when folded to create more cargo space, though that doesn't result in any improvement in total cargo room. Space behind the rear seat is up to 892 L from 846.
Equinox very much needed a technology update; the outgoing version felt as heavy as it was, and not even a big 300-plus horsepower V6 could make it feel particularly quick. That will change with this new version, especially when the 2.0L's ample torque is put together with that more svelte curb weight.
GM hasn't announced the full list of specs and standard features yet, but standard stuff across the line will include heated front seats and a remote engine starter. Also present will be Chevy's MyLink infotainment system with a choice of seven- and eight-inch displays, Apple Car Play/Android Auto and a 4G LTE wifi hotspot. Wheel sizes will range from 17 to 19 inches.
Available safety features will include GM's excellent safety alert seat, which vibrates when any of the car's active features are activated. Optional safety kit will include forward collision alert with following distance indicator, low-speed automatic forward braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, lane change alert with side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, rear seat reminder and surround vision system.
