This is the third model year for the Hyundai Ioniq, a compact hatchback purpose-built to house hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. In fact, the electric version was Hyundai's first fully electric mass-market vehicle.
We're sticking to the gas-electric Ioniq Hybrid here; the Ioniq Electric Plus plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and full electric variants are covered in separate buyer's guide entries. The Ioniq carries over into 2019 with no changes.
The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid matches a 1.6L gas four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.
Hyundai puts a six-speed automatic transmission between the motors and front wheels, in contrast to the smooth continuously variable transmissions (CVT) found in most hybrids.
Ioniq's most obvious competitor is the Toyota Prius. While that car has been around so long it's practically a brand unto itself, Toyota only recently added a plug-in version and has yet to roll out an all-electric vehicle. That makes us wonder what Toyota's up to.
Ioniq Hybrid trim levels are Essential, Preferred, Luxury and Ultimate.
Ioniq Hybrid starts out with 15-inch alloy wheels automatic headlights, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, manual front seat adjustments, a six-speaker stereo with 7.0-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control and a 4.2-inch digital gauge cluster display.
Hybrid Preferred models add LED daytime running lights and taillights, power eight-way driver's seat, heated rear seats, passive keyless entry, sunroof, heated steering wheel and blind spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.
Luxury trim brings 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, auto-dimming rearview mirror, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, driver attention warning, lane keeping assist and forward collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian detection.
Finally, Ultimate models get HID headlights with automatic high beams, navigation and an eight-speaker stereo with 8.0-inch touchscreen and a 7.0-inch gauge cluster display.
Hyundai's fuel consumption estimates for Ioniq Hybrid are 4.3/4.4 L/100 km (city/highway) in standard form and 4.2/4.0 in a thriftier Blue configuration.

Issue:
On certain Ioniq EV models, the vehicle could accelerate after the accelerator pedal is released.
Note: This problem can only happen under certain conditions after the vehicle enters "fail-safe" mode.
Safety Risk:
A vehicle that continues to accelerate could create the risk of a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you bring your vehicle to a dealer to update the electric power control unit (EPCU) software. The dealer will also add additional ground wiring between the drive motor/gear assembly and frame.

Issue:
On certain cars, the wheel lug nuts were not properly tightened during assembly. This could cause the nuts to loosen or fall off, and could result in a wheel separating from the car. Note: For the Ioniq model, this recall only involves the Ioniq PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) version.
Safety Risk:
A wheel separation could increase the risk of a crash. A wheel that detaches from a vehicle could create a hazard for other drivers and nearby people.
Corrective Actions:
The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their car to a dealer to ensure the front and rear wheel nuts are properly tightened.
