2001 Ford Expedition

by hcstevenson on 10-18-2012
a big vehicle that handles as well as a small car!
I was more than a little hesitant when I first drove this car, since was much larger than what I usually drove, but I was very pleased with it.

The handling was amazing, and it responded quickly and very smoothly. It was easier to drive than a small car.

Inside and outside, it looks lovely, like the high-class vehicle that it is. The interior was roomy and VERY comfortable for both the driver and passengers.

Since it was a larger vehicle, fuel economy wasn't the best, but no worse than similar vehicles, but still a bit of a concern with higher gas prices.

For long trips it was awesome, but the trunk and storage space were easy to access for every-day life like grocery shopping and transporting kids!

If you're looking for an SUV, this is a great choice!

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

by hcstevenson on 10-18-2012
Not my favourite car
This car tried too hard, but didn't deliver.

It seemed to try to be everything ... a more stylish and fun mid-size that could serve as a family car as well as, but it didn't quite work.

The exterior was fine, it did look nice, but it was nothing special. The interior had much less space than expected and the car often felt cramped and it was ackward to get the driver's seat into a comfortable position.

It was a decent drive, not bad on gas and provided power when needed for highway driving or climbing hills.

Maitenance was a pain. A number of large, ongoing issues came up and they were tricky to fix, requiring multiple trips to both the local mechanic and dealership.

All in all, it wasn't the best car I've owned.

2006 Ford Focus

by hcstevenson on 10-16-2012
A fun little car with pep!
For years I watched friends get Ford Focuses, and they were always pleased with them. It is great little car (or if you get the hatchback model, a great medium-sized car) that is easy to drive and great on gas.

It has a lot of pep, decent pick-up and quick responsiveness. Overall a great drive.

My only complaint is the the interior seems a little croweded and smushed, with for its size, should be roomier. Especially if you will be using the backseat often, it is best for package or small passengers.

2007 Kia Spectra5

by hcstevenson on 10-16-2012
We like our Kia!
We purchased a used Kia Spectra in 2009 and have been generally very happy with it.

The good stuff:
- good on gas
- very responsive, easy to drive, even in the winter
- fair sized interior
- we have the hatchback model, so easy to transport items.

The not so good stuff:
- small trunk space
- the seatbelt design is strange, and the belts often feel very uncomfortable
- expensive repairs. It doesn't break often, but when it does the repairs are complicated and expensive.

Overall, it has been a good buy!

1987 Mercury Grand Marquis

by hcstevenson on 10-15-2012
A very comfy car
I inherited an '87 Grand Marquis for my first car. It had already survived my grandfather (and running into a tree in Florida), my dad (who didn't run it into anything) and then it was mine (and I didn't run it into anything either - although I could have ... it was a well-built car).

It wasn't fashionable in the least, it felt like I was a tank and I much preferred to park in drive-through spots, but it really was a great car.

It is more comfortable than anything I've had since, super for long trips, had tons of options and power. It wasn't great on gas (I think I knew the gas station operator by name), and that could be expensive, but it had great pick-up and power.

We put a lot of miles on the car, from long trips, to daily commutes and errands, the car was well over 300,000km driven!

As it passed through the family, it seldom broke down or had any issues, kept us all safe, went on a great number of road-trips, and it was like saying goodbye to a member of the family when we finally replaced it once and for all.

2001 Pontiac Tempest

by hcstevenson on 10-13-2012
Average Car
This was my first car that I purchased on my own. It was used, and it was fine.

It wasn't anything awesome or special, but it got me to and from work with little issue.

Decent on gas, no major repair issues. Car had a fair bit of pep and could hold its own on the highway with quick acceleration.

The biggest frustration was the seatbelt design; it was attached to the door instead of the door jam like on most cars, and it was annoying trying to get in to place each time you got into the car.

Overall, it was fine ... nothing special, but no issues either.

2006 Hyundai Accent

by hcstevenson on 10-13-2012
Great Basic Vehicle
The Hyundai Accent is a great little car. I have to admit, I only bought it because it was cheap, and something that I could easily afford, but I have been delighted with my choice. The car is 6 years old, and I've had VERY few issues with it and enjoy driving it to and from work each day.

It is great on gas, easy to drive and is comfortable. The engine noise can be louder than expected, but not so much of a problem that it interferes with driving the car. I have the upgraded sound system, with the 6 speakers, and they produce a great sound, well worth the upgrade.

The only issue I've had is that it seems to "go-through" consumable parts, like tires and batteries more often than other cars I've owned, but overall a great little car. I'd buy it again!
