Volvo S40 2001-2011Change

This car has been so good to me. It is fun to drive and has been very reliable. People always comment to me what a nice looking car it is. I have to agree, after all, I bought the thing. I don't usually get too attached to my cars but it will be tough to get rid of this one if I ever do.

Solid car. Safe, reliable. No issues. Good 5 seater with good trunk space. Sensible dashboard layout.

Plenty of power, Turbo kicks in at low speed, so the power is always there when you need it
Handles well on all road conditions, real good in snow with Michelin snow tires

This car is known as a very reliable compact car. People who own this car love it as sporty, fun and safe. Maneuverability is excellent, you can fit into any sized parking space and there's room for everything with the huge trunk and folding back seats. Kids' safety locks for the back doors and windows make this a great car for pets too. To get the best out of the Volvo S40 you need to use 91 octane gas, but with good care, it will last forever.

Would buy a volvo again without question. Very safe on the road and comfortable for short or long trips. The only thing is it could have slightly more head room for tall people.

I've test driven VWs, Audis, BMWs, and Saabs, but I decided on the Volvo because I felt it had the best performance for its value. Great curbside appeal and a fun ride and handling. Safety features such as blind spot warnings front and side impact airbags are a plus.

If you owned Volvo once, you understand the difference with all other cars. Expect only the best: reliability, performance and highest safety, regrdless to the weather and season. Many more years of service and pleasure.

I personally believe this is one of the best all in one vehicles I have ever owned. Sure it may have some minor weaknesses such as headroom in the backseat and the fuel economy is not always the best but with that being said the pros overwhelmingly outweigh the cons. Lets start with the all wheel drive which is excellent in all road conditions especially with the help of traction and stability control this car really hugs the road. The 2.5 liter turboharged engine provides plenty of passing power and make this car enjoyable and thrilling to drive. With the help of a K&N Cold Air Intake and a six speed manual transmission my car records that I get 650-700km to a tank which is awesome! The car handles wonderfully and I look forward to driving it every day. I live in Alberta and we can have some nasty weather and brutal road conditions but this car has never even come close to letting me down. The seats are comfortable and the controls are simple and effective, with the accomodating climate control and heated seats. This car also has the option for an awesome 8-Speaker Premium JBL audio system which can please any music lover. The center control pannel is very stylish which the space behind it, I always get compliments from my passengers. The interior summed up can be described as practical yet sylish and very accomidating. The exterior offers a very sleek aerodynamic design that is very eye catching and impressive. The xenon blue lights, alloy wheels, and chrome twin exhaust also adds a tasteful look to the vehicle. All in all wonderful vehicle, I would recommend it to anyone!

Done 140k Km with it, still in very good shape, only normal repair done on it, brakes, oil change etc. Could be a little better on fuel economy but the comfort compensate and when doing long trip fuel economy isn't bad.

Reliable car, good comfort. At least 100000 km without defects. Main cons: a little noisy - the sound from engine and tires is too loud.

Great performance and handling. Excellent Safety rating. A truly fun and comfortable car to drive.

I have owned this vehicle for 13 years and I have to say it’s one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned, I have 267,000Km on it and have done no major work, only the usual brakes, tires etc. It has no rust, drives and handles like a new car. when they say Volvo "Built for Life" they are right.

So far, so good. Just got it on christmas day. Took a little getting used to. Definately more power and more sensitive all around. ie: steering, braking, acceleration. Really enjoying it now.

never had any major issues, smooth ride. Parts are a little expensive but worth the price and wait. Will defently be looking at a newer modle as my next car

The cars interior is all leather with wood trim, a nice touch and still in great shape. The cars turbocharged engine still has great pick up. If you don't hammer the turbo you can maintain a decent fuel economy. The trunk space is quite spacious for a car this size, 3 sets of clubs. The heated seats work great especially in this Canadian winter. You can really tell how solid this car is when you close the trunk/hood or doors.

This rare trim is pricy compared to other 2.4i S40 but really worth it!

Overall, the car is built with tons of high-tech components that really improves the driving experience.

The B5254T3 engine has CVVT that allow surprising amount of torque even at low RPM. This engine offers a different take on turbocharged design, offering surprising performance at low-end rpm, and virtually no tubo lag.

The transmission is impressive, and paired to the dual mass flywheel, the gear changes are smooth. The AWD system works well with the dynamic traction control.

It might lack in handling a bit compared to an A4 Quoattro, but the mountain of torque (that's 236 lbs) sure makes up. Not to mention that the suspension is just stiff enough to have a sporty feel while maintaining a decent level of "fluff" (we need that with our roads around Montreal).

The simplistic Scandinavian interior design is pleasant and user friendly.

Seating supports well without being overly sporty and it is just firm enough to live up to Volvo high comfort standards.

The downsides with this car are the running costs. My management system tallies up my average gas consumption at 9.0 l/100km, and I am really light on the pedal. Parts are also pricy and the car seems to have a fair amount of recurring problems.

Common problems with this care are:
- Failing engine mounts
- Damaged diaphragm in breather box
- Wheel bearings giving in soon

a good general experience but many electrical things started to fail within a couple of years. battery died, 12 volt outlet does not work, am radio does not work, seat warmers on the driver's side does not work.

I drove this car for 1 year and upgraded to the XC90. It has great handling, comfortable interior. I never had any problems with it whatsoever. The exterior has a distinctive look.
The only issue I had was I thought t needed a little more power.

Pros
Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, cutting-edge style inside and out, straightforward controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.

Cons
Firm suspension can be choppy on the highway, mediocre performance from the non-turbo engine, stability control isn't standard.
