Mazda MX-5 Crowned World Car of the Year

NEW YORK – From a long list of nominees announced at last year's Frankfurt auto show, only three cars for each of the five categories made the cut as World Car of the Year finalists.

Chosen by a jury of 73 international journalists, the fifteen finalists were revealed at the Geneva Auto Show last month.

The overall winner was crowned this morning at the New York Auto Show. The new generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 took home the top honours as 2016 World Car of the Year, as well winning the award for World Car Design too.

Mazda's iconic roadster, history's best-selling sports car, beat out the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC to win the prestigious award. "What a wonderful honor, to have the Mazda MX-5 named World Car of the Year," said Masahiro Moro, President and CEO, Mazda North American Operations.

The fourth generation MX-5 has won more than 30 international awards, including 2016 UK Car of the Year and 2015-2016 Car of the Year Japan.

Here are the final winners:
2016 World Car of the Year - Mazda MX-5
2016 World Luxury Car of the Year - BMW 7-Series
2016 World Performance Car of the Year - Audi R8 Coupe
2016 World Green Car of the Year - Toyota Mirai (FCV)
