Fastback Mazda MX-5 RF Stuns in New York

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF was unveiled at a pre-show launch on Tuesday night in New York, days before the official opening of the show.

The RF stands for "Retractable Fastback" - a body style sure to incite lust from many a Miata fan boy.

All North American models will get the same 2.0L SkyActiv-G four-cylinder as the 2016 Mazda MX-5 soft top. Unlike the soft-top, which can be operated at almost any speed, the hardtop power retracts at speeds up to 10 km/h only.

No word on weight penalties but Mazda does claim to have engineered the retractable rear window and roof so as not to impact cargo volume at all.

The New York International Auto Show will also feature the full production launch of the 2017 Mazda CX-9 after it was revealed in Los Angeles in November.

More to come as further details become available from the show.
