The Subaru Forester, the automaker's best-selling vehicle in the US since 2015, is receiving a few upgrades and design tweaks for the 2017 model year to maintain its sales performance. Major changes include a quieter interior, safety tech and better gas mileage.
Subaru's EyeSight driver assist technology now has a wider and longer field of view for the windshield mounted stereo cameras, which also benefits the Lane Keep Assist function. All models feature Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert; while higher trims get High Beam Assist, Steering Responsive Headlights and Reverse Auto Braking.
Exterior design changes include a hexagonal grille and more body colour selection around the air-dam for naturally aspirated models. Headlights are sleeker and feature C-shaped LED running lights.
Inside, the cabin is quieter with the help of thicker door glass, new seals, additional under-floor insulation and an acoustic glass windshield. Among other changes, drivers will benefit from a steering wheel with intuitive audio, Bluetooth and cruise control (on the Touring Trim, the steering wheel is heated). Saddle Brown perforated leather-trimmed upholstery is an available option on the Touring trim.
The 2017 Subaru Forester retains its current 170 hp 2.5 L naturally aspirated four-cylinder and 250 hp 2.0 L turbo four engines. EPA fuel consumption for the 2.5 is given as 9.0 / 7.4 / 8.4 L/100km (city/highway/combined) – an improvement of 0.6 L/100km city and 0.3 L/100km overall. The 2.0 L turbo is rated at 10.2 / 8.7 / 9.4 (city/highway/combined).
The 2.0XT Touring with EyeSight gets Active Torque Vectoring as standard for better handling. Premium, Limited and Touring with CVT, meanwhile, get X-Mode traction assist with Hill Descent Control.
The updated Forester will be available at dealerships starting in July.
