Life is hectic. You get in your car, pick up a coffee, and drive to work. Every day. Over and over. It's easy to fall into habit and forget that something in your routine is different today. Any little change, like maybe you're supposed to pick up milk on the way home, is glossed over and forgotten. It's not your fault, it's how our brains work. Maybe you have a service appointment today, maybe it's a meeting. Maybe it's that you unexpectedly had to take the kids or the dog to daycare that day. As a result, and all too often, a child can be forgotten in the back seat – with potentially tragic consequences. GM is trying to do what they can to stop this, and on the 2017 GMC Acadia they are introducing an industry-first rear-seat reminder.
There are no extra sensors, it's all just a little bit of computer trickery. The Acadia monitors the rear doors, and if either one is opened and closed within 10 minutes of the vehicle starting, or while the vehicle is running, it triggers the reminder. Then the next time the vehicle is turned off, the Acadia will sound a chime five times and display a message on the instrument panel that reads, "Rear Seat Reminder / Look in Rear Seat." Hopefully all it takes is that little ding and a reminder to break your haze and get you to look in the back.
