The Museum of contemporary art of Detroit has seen art in all its form. Sunday night however, art took the shape of a compact SUV. GM hosted the official reveal of their new-generation model in an environment fitting of the new design. Features of what is to become a new visual signature for GMC were on display at the museum such as deconstructed headlights, wheels and engines just before the curtain was lifted off the pièce de résistance: the all-new 2018 GMC Terrain.
With the introduction of the new Terrain also comes a new era of design for the brand. From a boxy SUV, the Terrain gains in refinement with more defined character lines and wishbone-shaped LED headlights. The beltline takes a dramatic swoop at the back and the black B and C pillars give the illusion of a floating roof. At the back , the c-shape taillights add a refined yet minimalist touch. If the entry-level SLE will come standard with 17-inch and optional 18, the Denali will throw in a set 19-inch alloy wheels.
New with the Terrain is a range of new turbocharged powertrains, starting with the 1.6L turbodiesel meant to perfectly combine power and fuel economy. A 1.5L and a 2.0L, four-cylinder gasoline powertrains will also be available, teamed with a nine-speed automatic transmission and with the choice of a front-wheel or all-wheel drive layout. The turbocharged engines will be the only available powertrains in the new Terrain; there is no talk of a naturally aspirated powerhouse. When equipped, the Traction Select system will allow the driver to adapt the vehicle’s handling to the road conditions and get a more personalized driving experience.
On the inside, we can of course expect to find GM's OnStar 4G LTE wifi hotspot as well as Apple Carplay and Android Auto and the myGMC app that allows the owner to manage their vehicle from a distance. The Terrain will also feature a flight of safety technologies including Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Change Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Surround Vision and many more. Just like the sister brand Chevrolet, GMC will also offer a teen-driver oriented safety feature simply called Teen Driver that allows parents to set specific parameters for their young new driver and to have access to a report card to enforce good driving habits. Also new in the Terrain is the Rear Seat Reminder meant to remind the driver to check the backseat in what GM describes as ”certain circumstances”, most likely referring to young passengers.
