General Motors is sending production of the redesigned GMC Terrain to Mexico, and along with it goes 600 jobs from the Ingersoll, Ontario plant that currently builds the SUV.
GM announced earlier this month that production of the SUV would be moving, and Automotive News has reported that Unifor Local 88 President Dan Borthwick announced the job cuts earlier today.
The CAMI plant currently produces the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox mid-size SUVs. The twin SUVs are being redesigned for 2018 and with the introduction of the new model this summer, assembly of the Terrain will split off and move to a plant in Mexico. The all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox will stay at the Ingersoll, Ontario plant. Originally, GM planned to continue building the current Equinox until summer 2018 which would have preserved the jobs, but according to Borthwick, those plans have changed and the old model will be discontinued this summer. GM has committed to spending $800 million at the plant to produce the new Equinox, and says that investment will not change.
There are currently 2,800 Unifor employees at the Ingersoll plant, but with the plant putting out fewer trucks, fewer workers will be required.
