The BMW Motor City stage was packed with viewers gathered to witness the arrival of the Munich-based manufacturer's latest novelty. This time around, the "most successful business sedan" entered its seventh generation with style with the world introduction of the new 2017 BMW 5 Series sedan, presented in three trim levels.
With close to eight millions units sold through six generations, no wonder BMW uses the words "most successful business sedan". The changes to this new and seventh generation are subtle, with a refreshed front portion and character lines. The real change lies beneath the sheet metal. The new 5 Series is 100 kg lighter, thanks to increased use of aluminum steel. It has also gained interior space in the redesign process, its overall length having been increased by 35 mm.
The premium sedan has been packed with a selection of driver assist features that include lane change and lane keep assists with active side collision protection, evasion aid, cross-traffic alert, active cruise control, speed limit assist and such, features BMW says are the next step towards autonomous driving.
The new BMW 5-Series will feature a pair of twin-turbo powertrains; a 2.0L, four-cylinder that will produce 252 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and a fuel economy estimated at 5.4 L/100 km, and a 340 hp, 3.0L straight six-cylinder engine that will allow the 5-Series to do the 0-100 run in 4.8 seconds. The global market is also expected to get two diesel versions, the 520d and 530d.
Sharing the stage with the new BMW 5 were two of its variants: the 456 hp M550 equipped with an 4.4L eight-cylinder engine and xDrive all-wheel drive system as well as the 530e, the plug-in hybrid version that will be available with both the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive and will offer a 50-kilometre all-electric range for an estimated fuel economy of 1.9 L/100 km.
Official Canadian specs and the arrival date of the new 2017 BMW 5 Series in showrooms have yet to be released.
