Ford has just debuted the all-new Expedition. The first complete redesign for the full-size SUV in over a decade brings more size, more tech, but an all aluminium (Al) body helps drop almost 140 kg from the curb weight.
Outside, the Expedition gets a complete redesign, with the body made from lightweight aluminium like its F-150 stablemate. That body is attached to a new steel frame. The new body gets bigger than before, around 100mm longer than before. The extended-wheelbase Expedition Max is 25mm longer than the old one.
There will only be one engine choice, the newest 3.5L Ecoboost V6 from the 2017 Ford F-150. Power hasn't been confirmed but the engine makes 375 hp in the pickups so expect a number close to that. Behind that engine will be Ford's new 10-speed automatic. An available electronic limited-slip differential is new for the new truck and adaptive suspension will be optional.
Ford says that more than half of Expedition drivers want to tow with their big SUV, so Ford is offering their trailer back-up assist. It uses a knob on the dash, the rear camera, and some sensors to help the driver back up their trailer. The new Ex will also get Sync 3 with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Each row will get two USB charge points, and four 12-volt and a single 110-volt AC oulet are standard. Useful on anything this large, surround view cameras, and parking sensors will be available along with self-parking, blind spot warnings, collision detection, and radar cruise control.
The Expedition can seat eight, with a new cabin that is heavily F-150 influenced. At least in the front row. There are changes though, including an extra glove box and new door panels. The second-row seats tip and slide to let passengers in the way, way back. Fold all the back seats down and a full-size sheet of plywood will fit. With the seats up, Ford has designed a shelving unit to help stop cargo from falling out and support about 25 kg of items.
Look for the all-new Expedition at dealers this fall.
