Ford is adding a healthy dose of off-road capability to its full-size 2018 Expedition. The Expedition FX4 gets better shocks, tires, skid plates, a limited-slip diff, and more. All to make it at home on the trail.
It comes solely with a 375 hp and 470 lb-ft version of Ford's 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. Connecting that engine to the all-wheel drive system is a 10-speed automatic. The combination gives the Expedition a best-in-class 4,219 kg tow rating.
The new Terrain Management System controls the four-wheel drive system and offers seven drive modes. That includes normal and sport modes, a tow/haul mode, and then off-road modes for grass/gravel/snow for loose terrain, sand for low traction, and mud/ruts for uneven surfaces. The seventh is an Eco setting.
Helping put that power to the ground is an electronic limited-slip rear differential. It will vary power side to side as needed to get maximum traction. Off-road shocks are more stiffly tuned to help keep the wheels on the ground when things get bumpy. All-terrain tires with beefy sidewalls help smooth the ride and deliver traction over obstacles.
To protect the new Expedition's all-aluminium body, the FX4 has seven skid plates to guard the underside. That includes sand shields to prevent the intercoolers from clogging and steel plates protecting the steering rack, engine, transmission, transfer case, and fuel tank. The chin spoiler has been shortened for better approach angles. To protect the interior, FX4 gets deep rubber floor liners to trap dirt, mud, and water.
Finally, the FX4 gets unique 18-inch wheels, chrome running boards, and FX4 badges. The 2018 Expedition FX4 Off-Road goes on sale this fall.
