Ford Mustang GT 0-100 in Under 4 Seconds

Ford says the new Mustang GT is the fastest one yet, thanks to more power quicker shifting, stickier tires, and an all-new Drag Strip mode.

The new Drag Strip mode is one of five selectable modes that drivers can choose from. This one is designed for maximum acceleration and straight-line performance. It is controlled by the 10-speed automatic transmission, and Ford says that the feature "delivers a significant acceleration boost, eliminating the lost time usually associated with automatic shifting." The GT can hit 100 km/h from a stop in under four seconds.

Ford says that the new 10-speed auto has quicker and more accurate shifts than the six-speed it replaces. It can also handle multiple gear downshifts and skipping gears on upshifts.

In addition to Drag Strip mode, there is also normal, sport, track, and snow. As well as paddles to let the driver pick shifts themselves. Chose the Performance Pack, and the Mustang adds new custom-designed Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires to help improve acceleration and cornering.

Power from the Mustang GT's 5.0L V8 is up 25 hp and 20 lb-ft to 460 hp and 420 lb-ft. The engine now has both direct and port-style fuel injection. Direct injection increases power and fuel economy, but can lead to carbon buildup in the intake. Adding port injection can solve the buildup problem.

The EcoBoost four-cylinder gets faster too. It adds 30 lb-ft of torque to bring the total to 310 hp and 350 lb-ft from the 2.3L engine.

The new Mustang is expected at dealers this fall, but should be online to configure on Ford's website later this week. Until then, check out Ford's video of other things you can do in under four seconds.
