Ford Announces 700+ hp Mustang Shelby GT500

Turns out the Mustang Bullitt wasn't the only surprise hidden in Ford's pony car sleeve. Late last night, Ford revealed that the Shelby GT500 was coming back. And it will be the most powerful road-legal Mustang Ford's ever built.

The press release was short and to the point. There is a Mustang Shelby GT500 coming in 2019, and it's going to have more than 700 hp.

That's double the 355 hp that the original 1967 GT500 cars offered from their massive 7.0L V8s. It's also enough power to put the 707 hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and 808 hp Demon on notice.

Ford said that the new GT500 will attack tracks and drag strips starting next year. That means they're planning a car that can handle as well as it can run the quarter-mile.

That's about all they're saying, but there is a teaser video to go along with the announcement. Look closely and you'll see the big rear wing, massive front bumper with a prominent splitter, acres of hood extractor vents, and absolutely enormous calipers on what appear to be carbon ceramic brake rotors. Plus we think that those might be side exhaust dumps hidden underneath those side skirts. Unless it's a poorly rendered shadow. With a 700+ hp monster, we'll lean toward side pipes. "For off-road use only" of course.

The last GT500 built by Ford was sold from 2012 to 2014. It used a supercharged 5.8L V8 that made 662 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque.

So watch the clip, and then wait. But don't worry, we're pretty sure Ford will give us more than a few more looks at the car before 2019.
