Chevrolet has revealed its redesigned 2019 Silverado full-size pickup truck will offer a four-cylinder engine as the standard powerplant in select trims.
The 2.7L turbocharged motor will be the standard power source in LT and RST trims, displacing a 4.3L V6 that will remain as the base engine in lower-volume variants.
With 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque, the new four-pot handily eclipses the 4.3L's power output, which is rated at 285 hp and 305 lb-ft. Chevrolet says the new engine is "expected" to offer greater fuel efficiency and a better power-to-weight ratio than the V6.
Early next year, Chevrolet will also add a 3.0L turbodiesel six-cylinder whose power figures haven't been finalized.
V8 options include 5.3L and 6.2L engines carried over from last year, the smaller good for 355 hp/383 lb-ft and the larger offering 420 hp/460 lb-ft.
Chevrolet will also offer three different transmission choices, each tied to the engine specified: the V6 and a 5.3L V8 with active fuel management will use a six-speed automatic; the four-cylinder and a version of the 5.3L V8 with cylinder deactivation will get an eight-speed; and the 6.2L V8 and forthcoming diesel will share a 10-speed auto.
General Motors says production of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado will begin in the third quarter of 2018 with V8-powered Crew Cab models, followed by regular and double cab trucks with the V6 and four-cylinder in the fourth quarter. Diesel trucks will follow in early 2019. Fuel consumption estimates and towing and payload ratings will be revealed closer to the truck's launch.
