Lego has launched the latest member of its Technic family of kits, a 3,599-piece extravaganza that lets builders replicate the Bugatti Chiron.
The Chiron is a 1:8-scale model that measures 56 cm long and 25 cm wide in finished form, making it similar in size to the Porsche 911 GT3 RS Technic kit from a few years back.
However, the Chiron handily eclipses that Porsche kit for the number of individual pieces involved; the 911 comprises "over 2,700 pieces," according to LEGO.
For that, you can thank the toy company's usual attention to detail in recreating the Chiron's V16 engine, an eight-speed transmission with paddle gearshift and a recreation of the car's active rear wing. (Interestingly, the real Chiron's transmission is a seven-speed.)
Looking at Lego's photos of the kit, it's not hard to see how it adds up to 3,599 pieces: the engine is recreated in some detail and mounted, along with the transmission, on a subframe. The wheels even "bolt" onto brake rotors adorned with Bugatti blue calipers.
The Chiron is the 1,500 hp car that used its 1,500 hp to set a short-lived record for accelerating to 400 km/h and braking to a stop again in less than 42 seconds. That feat was bested weeks later by a Koenigsegg Regera, which pulled it off in less than 37 seconds.
Each example of the Lego Chiron gets its own serial number and a "speed key" that lets the "driver" move the active rear spoiler between its handling and top-speed positions. Inside the trunk is a Bugatti overnight bag.
Lego delivers the Technic Chiron kit with a coffee table-type instruction book, and has prepared a series of podcasts with Bugatti and Lego experts.
The Lego Technic Bugatti Chiron goes on sale today at the toy company's brick-and-mortar and online stores for CAD$399.99, and will be available at all other authorized retailers from August 1.
