The Geneva Motor Show is super- and hypercar central, so Bugatti chose this opportunity to reveal its latest work of art, the Bugatti Voiture Noire. Black Car just sounds so much more exotic in French. Bugatti says it embodies everything Bugatti has ever done, from the Atlantique to the Veyron, and so on. This one-off apparently cost a cool 11 million Euros, or about – wait for it, and prepare your best Dr. Evil impression – 17 million Canadian dollars. Not that it really matters because unless you happen to be a certain wealthy “Bugatti enthusiast”, you're out of luck as there will only ever be one.
To put that into perspective, you can get 650 examples of the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Coupe Final Edition for that kind of money. And still have almost enough left over for an Audi A7 Sportback while you’re at it.
Styled to recall Ettore Bugatti’s eldest son Jean’s Type 57SC Atlantic, the black-on-black Voiture Noire features a few silver flourishes on the wheels, rocker panels and wing mirrors. The goal was to make the Voiture Noire look “all of a piece”, as if crafted from a single block of…well, carbon fibre, I guess, because that’s what it’s made from. The elongated front end, meanwhile, has been designed to crate a lower, longer-looking car than the Chiron. They say that coupled with the helmet visor-inspired wraparound visor, the Voiture Noire gets a more grand-touring air, as opposed to that of a Hypercar. The six (six!) tailpipes and wild wheels, meanwhile, look like something out of a science fiction movie, which is about right for a car priced this far into the stratosphere.
It should come as no surprise that power comes from a Chiron-sourced quad-turbo W16 engine rated at 1,479 hp and 1,180 lb-ft of torque. Not that much, really, if you compare it to a Great Lakes Freighter.
Now, of course, comes the question everyone's asking: When does the Lego version come out?
