Toyota Adds TRD Special Edition to 86

Toyota is giving the 86 another special edition for 2019. The TRD Special adds a host of performance goodies along with some extra luxury features too.

The Toyota 86's 2.0L flat-four engine might only make 205 hp, but if you're fixating on that power figure for the sports coupe, you're probably missing the point. The 86 is about nimble steering and quick handling. Communication not grunt. And Toyota's 86 TRD Special Edition is intended to amplify that even more.

The TRD Special Edition starts with bigger front brakes. Four-piston front and two-piston rear Brembo callipers grip 12.8 and 12.4-inch rotors, up 1.2 inches from standard up front. That allows for more clamping power, but more importantly should be more resistant to fade. Covering those brakes are 18-inch allows wearing Michelin Pilot Sport 4 performance tires.

The special 86 wears Sachs dampers that Toyota says sharpen steering response and refine stability.

Telling passers-by you're in the Special Edition, the car comes only in black. It wears a retro-style TRD graphic and a body kit that comes with new bumpers, side sills, and spoiler.

Inside, there is a red and black telescoping wheel with red contrast stitching. The sport bucket seats are leather and trimmed in red and black, and the car wears a TRD logo on the passenger side instrument panel. The TRD model has the GT's 4.2-inch multi-information display that shows data like G-force and has a stopwatch.

The TRD Special Edition will be a limited production model, expected on sale later this summer.
