Transport Canada has released a big recall on Ram trucks, affecting more than a quarter of a million pickups in Canada.
The problem is with Ram pickups that have a power locking tailgate. An issue with that power locking mechanism means that they could release the tailgate and open it unexpectedly. While that might not be a safety issue for the driver of the pickup, should the tailgate come open while driving, any unsecured cargo could fall out of the pickup box onto the roadway.
Cargo falling out of the box is a road hazard and could increase the risk of a crash that could cause injury and/or property damage.
In NHTSA filings, FCA stated that the issue was with the tailgate actuator limited tab. It can fracture and allow the lock rod control bracket to move too far. That can pull the lock rods and release the tailgate latches, which then allows it to fall.
To fix the issue, dealers will modify the lock mechanism to ensure that it can't open unintentionally. FCA US said that it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.
The affected vehicles include Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups from model years 2015 to 2017. That totals 260,315 trucks in Canada.
