Fiat Chrysler's Ram pickup truck division is recalling about 80,000 vehicles in Canada to address potential steering system failures.
The larger of two separate recall campaigns covers nearly 63,000 of Ram's heavy duty 2500 and 3500 trucks sold between 2013 and 2017. In these vehicles, a nut in the steering linkage could come loose and cause a loss of steering control. Fiat Chrysler is asking owners of the affected pickups to take their trucks back to the dealer for an inspection.
If the nut in question – specifically, the outboard steering linkage jam nut – is still tight, it will be welded to its adjuster sleeve. If it's loose, the entire drag link assembly will be replaced.
The second campaign covers 18,700 light-duty 1500 pickups from the 2019 model year. Here, a loose electrical connection in the power steering system may cause intermittent loss of power steering assist while driving. FCA, obviously enough, says a loss of assist would make the truck difficult to steer. "This may make the truck difficult to steer and could cause both oversteer and understeer conditions," said the recall notice.
Safety concerns aside, this sounds like the basis for a pretty cool amusement park thrill ride.
Owners of the affected Ram 1500 trucks are asked to take their pickups to the dealer for an inspection of the electrical connection, and, if necessary, a repair.
As with all safety-related recalls, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Ram will make all necessary repairs at no cost to the vehicle's owner.
