Ford Hails the 10 Millionth Mustang

Ford is today celebrating the production of the 10 millionth example of its Mustang, which the company claims is not only the best-selling sports car of the last 50 years but also boasts the most Facebook followers of any car in the world.

It's a strange world we live in when more than 8.5 million people "follow" a car on social media, but 10 million examples produced is an awfully significant number for a single model: Since 1963 – coincidentally, just one year before Ford started building the Mustang Honda has sold 100 million vehicles worldwide (not counting motorcycles and ATVs).

Instead of tossing about confetti they'd only have to vacuum out of the carpet later, Ford is celebrating by bringing together more than 60 owners of Mustangs from all model years to spell out "10,000,000" with their cars and watch a P-51 Mustang fighter plane do a fly-by over the Flat Rock, MI, plant that builds the current generation of the car.

Mustang number 10,000,000 is a 2019 Wimbledon White GT convertible with a six-speed transmission built to pay tribute to the first 1964.5 Mustang to roll off the assembly line, which had a 164 hp V8 and a three-speed manual.

The latest addition to the car's extensive range is the limited edition Mustang Bullitt, which pays tribute to the Steve McQueen movie that this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.
