Jaguar Land Rover Launches Infotainment For Classic Models

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has revealed that a recently launched line of aftermarket infotainment systems for the brands' classic models will soon be available to Canadian customers.

The British automaker will offer single-DIN (the size of a typical aftermarket car stereo available at auto parts stores) systems in four different head unit designs to suit the aesthetics of a range of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles from years past. Black and chrome faceplates will be offered for Jaguar cars, while Land Rover-specific units will come in black or silver brushed aluminum finishes.

JLR says the systems will incorporate modern functions like navigation (in up to 32 languages), Bluetooth and smartphone integration, plus the AM/FM radio functions more typical of the vehicles' vintage. Other features include USB inputs and SD card slots.

Many of the high-tech functions will be controlled via a 3.5-inch touchscreen framed by more traditional rotary controls and hard buttons, and an internal microphone will pick up voices in the cabin for hands-free phone calls.

JLR doesn't say how many specific models or model years will support the new stereo systems, but we presume they'll work in any car that came with a single-DIN radio, a size adopted by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in 1984.

Canadian availability begins in October, and while pricing hasn't been set yet, this looks set to be a pricey add-on for your classic British vehicle: in the UK, these units are priced to start at more than CAD$2,000.
