Ford Turns Edge ST Into Hollywood Camera Car

The camera vehicles used to capture the action in movie car chase scenes have a challenging mandate: they must be quick enough to keep up with the action, and be capable of carrying the gear needed to get it on film.

For the latest addition to its fleet, Hollywood's Pursuit Systems teamed up with Ford to turn that automaker's Edge ST performance crossover into a vehicle designed to capture movie car chase magic.

For this project, the Edge ST's most obvious modification is the roughly 450 kg camera and crane mounted to its roof. Its addition required Ford to boost the output of the ST's 2.7L turbo V6 (it makes 335 hp/380 lb-ft of torque in factory form) and add air suspension at all four wheels to compensate for the extra weight of the camera and crane.

Ford also gutted the interior so that Pursuit Systems could upfit the car with a roll cage and film equipment that lets the crew see the footage they're capturing in real time.

The sole aesthetic mod is a matte black wrap that minimizes reflections visible in the vehicles being filmed.

This is more than just a promotional exercise on Ford's part: Pursuit Systems has added the Edge ST to its fleet of camera vehicles, which also includes a BMW X5M, Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes-AMG ML 63. The company says it will "use (the Edge) in future film and commercial projects," but doesn't provide specifics.
