Subaru Brings the Thunder Again with BRZ Raiu Edition

Subaru might not be bringing Canadians the hotter WRX STI S209, but that doesn't mean we're getting left out in the rain. Subaru Canada is giving us an exclusive BRZ Raiu edition, the second in the Raiu line, in very limited numbers.

The first Raiu Edition was the 2019 WRX Raiu. From the Japanese word for thunderstorm, it arrived here last year, with a number of special touches inside and out.

Like the WRX, the BRZ Raiu Edition will come in extremely limited volumes. Only 100 units will be built, and only for Canadians. The Raiu is based on the BRZ Sport-Tech RS. That version of Subaru's compact rear-drive sport coupe means it already has that car's upgrades like heated and Alcantara-trimmed front sports seats, Brembo brakes, and Sachs dampers. Plus 17-inch gunmetal grey wheels.

To set the Raiu apart from other BRZ models, it gets black exterior accents and a Cool Grey Khaki exterior colour. That's the same shade as the WRX version, and it does a decent job of impersonating a thundercloud. There's also an STI-branded front lip, side skirts, and rear side spoilers. Inside, Subaru has fitted an STI short shifter.

Unchanged is the 2.0L boxer four that puts out 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. This one will come only with a six-speed manual transmission.

The 2019 BRZ Raiu Edition will arrive at dealers soon, starting from $33,795.
