Toyota has announced a starting MSRP of $27,990 for its 2019 Prius Hybrid and option of all-wheel drive for the first time in the model's history. That entry price is a modest increase of $510 over the 2018 model; the new AWD-e commands a $1,000 premium at $28,990.
The Prius AWD-e all-wheel system has no mechanical connection between the front and rear wheels. Instead, the rear axle is powered by a second electric motor that is activated when the front wheels slip. In normal driving, the Prius operates purely in front-wheel drive.
The base model is equipped much as it was for 2018, with heated front seats, a 6.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, automatic air conditioning, cloth upholstery, heated side mirrors and passive keyless entry.
Toyota has attached a $2,200 price increase to the Technology trim, bumping the MSRP to $32,490. This includes a number of new features, including Softex seat upholstery, heated and Softex-trimmed steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, premium LED headlights, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and an eight-way power driver's seat. There's also navigation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and wireless smartphone charging. Many of those features were shifted out of the Advanced option package available in last year's Tech model.
The entry AWD-e model is equipped similarly to the base FWD trim, but adds fog lights, premium LED headlights, Softex steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging and a stripped-down passive keyless system that works just on the driver's door and tailgate.
Prius AWD-e Technology ($32,990) main convenience addition is an 11.6-inch infotainment display. An Advanced package ($34,790) is the top configuration, adding a heads-up display, adaptive/auto-leveling headlights, front and rear parking sensors and a garage door opener.
The 2019 Toyota Prius and Prius AWD-e are on sale now at the brand's dealers across Canada.
