BMW made clear its electric vehicle intentions today at the Geneva auto show with the global reveal of the first-ever X3 hybrid, alongside a raft of other new and updated plug-in models.
The German automaker says it will start production of the X3 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) this fall, powered by a four-cylinder gas engine with an electric motor and battery that promise 50 km of all-electric driving. BMW will further add an all-electric X3 for the 2020 model year.
BMW's Geneva display also includes second-generation versions of other PHEV models. The 330e and 745e sedans form the bookends of the brand's electrified offerings: BMW says the newest compact 330e gets an all-electric range up to 60 km (about a 50 percent increase), while the updated 745e's range is up nearly 30 percent to 58 km.
The X5 xDrive 45e mid-size crossover's 80 km electric range is three times that of its predecessor, while offering a total of 394 hp from gas and electric power combined.
Other updates include a new, 12.0 kWh battery for the 530e mid-size sedan with an electric driving range up to 64 km, an increase of about a third.
BMW says its global plug-in portfolio will be comprised of 12 vehicles by the end of 2019, a figure it predicts will swell to 25 by 2025. Existing electrified models in the North American market include the i3 (PHEV and all-electric), the i8 sports car and Mini Cooper Countryman PHEV.
