BMW is the latest automaker to add over-the-air (OTA) software updates to its vehicle lineup.
The German brand today announced the addition of OTA remote upgrade functionality to vehicles fitted with its most recent operating system.
Now, owners of the new 3 Series sedan, X5 SUV and 8 Series coupe -- all of which use version 7.0 of the BMW OS -- can download, install and activate new features without having to visit a dealership.
BMW says the first upgrade on offer is its Intelligent Personal Assistant, which allows a driver to control a variety of secondary systems using the "Hey BMW" prompt. Once the personal assistant is installed, future updates to expand its functionality will be offered at no charge.
Later, Bimmer says owners will be able to download software to enable optional driver assistance systems, like active cruise control and side collision protection.
Owners can download updates through the car itself, using a smartphone or home computer.
