Mazda is increasing the number of diesel crossovers on the market by one. The CX-5 will get Skyactiv-D in Canada in the second half of this year.
The Skyactiv-D diesel is a 2.2 L twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Mazda says it'll make an estimated 168 hp and an appropriately impressive 290 lb-ft of torque from just 2,000 rpm.
The CX-5's current powertrains are a naturally aspirated 2.5 L four-cylinder that makes 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, with a rated 7.9 L/100 km highway, and a turbocharged 2.5 L four-cylinder with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque rated at 8.7. The diesel offers the same highway figure as the small engine with torque closer to the top-trim engine. Rounding out the figures, it should get 8.9 L/100 km in the city and 8.5 combined. The gas engines are rated at 9.8 and 10.8 L/100 km in the city giving the diesel a bigger advantage at the pumps in-town.
Mazda says that the Skyactiv-D will be available on the Signature trim with all-wheel drive. That's the loaded model. The company says it "preserves the excellent response and easy-revving feel for which Mazda's Skyactiv diesel engines are renowned." It's also a diesel that will rev to 5,500 rpm, which is lofty revving for that type of fuel.
The Mazda CX-5 Signature Diesel is set to arrive at dealers in the second half of this year as a 2019 model year vehicle. Mazda says pricing and full specs will come closer to the on-sale date.
