Jaguar Land Rover has just made a big announcement about the company's future electrification plans that includes where they're to be built, but also what the first new model is going to be; an electric XJ that will be arriving soon. It will be the company's first electric sedan.
First, JLR says that its new range of electrified vehicles will be built at the company's Castle Bromwich plant, keeping production of the cars in the UK. Though there was no word on if the company's first EV, the Austrian-built I-Pace would be relocated.
That will put vehicle manufacturing, electric drive unit assembly, and battery assembly at the same place. Jaguar says the battery hall will have capacity for 150,000 units.
The transition to electrification comes as Jaguar announces the very last current-generation XJ sedan is rolling off that same production line today.
After eight generations, the XJ will be going electric, designed by the same team that created the I-Pace. Work will start later this month on converting the assembly plant for electric production. The Castle Bromwich plant first opened in 1940, building Spitfire fighters.
JLR hasn't said when exactly we'll first see the electric XJ, giving us just a highly stylized I-Pace as a teaser. This news comes just a month after Jag and BMW announced a joint investment for shared research and collaboration on next-gen EV tech.
