Jaguar has shown a number of future vehicles to World Car Awards Jurors at its secretive design studio in Coventry, UK.
Among those vehicles was the new Jaguar J-Pace SUV, which will be the brand's largest and most luxurious SUV in its product portfolio.
The J-Pace will ride on the same MLA platform that will underpin the new Land Rover Defender, the automaker also confirmed this week. The Defender will go on sale in 2020 as a 2021 model year vehicle, so the J-Pace should arrive shortly thereafter - perhaps in time for the 2022 model year.
The British brand desperately needs a large three-row SUV in its portfolio to do take on offerings like the Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7, and Audi Q7. Not only are large vehicles like this becoming increasingly popular in important markets like China and North America, they can also have strong profit margins due to their high sticker price.
In addition to the new J-Pace SUV, Jaguar also showed World Car Jurors the upcoming replacements for the XE sedan and F-Type coupe, along with a fully electric version of the XJ full-size sedan. The fully electric XJ is expected to debut later this year and will the automaker's second fully-electric model after it introduced the I-Pace in late 2018.
As we reported previously, Jaguar will have at least one hybrid or fully electric powertrain on offer in all of its future models. The J-Pace may therefore be offered as a hybrid or EV one day, along with the XE sedan and F-Type replacements. Autotrader.ca also exclusively uncovered a trademark filing for "Jaguar EV-Type" earlier this month, potentially indicating that a fully electric Jaguar sports car is on the way as well.
