Ford announced back in February that the 2020 Super Duty pickups would be getting a new engine. What they didn't say was how much power and torque it would make – which is kind of the most important bit of info when it comes to pickups. Now we know.
The all-new 7.3L V8 engine is designed specifically for the big trucks and vans, with a cam-in-block design instead of the current DOHC 6.2L. The old-school design means big torque down low – exactly what truck buyers want.
How much is this biggest-in-class V8 going to make? 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. That's up from the 385 hp and 430 lb-ft that the 6.2L makes. It's also a healthy 29 hp up from the 6.6L gasser in the 2020 Silverado and Sierra HDs, but just 9 lb-ft more. Ram's 6.4L V8 makes 410 hp and 429 lb-ft.
What may be even more important to truck buyers is that this new engine will come with a 10-speed automatic; Ram gets eight and the GM twins have just six speeds in their gas gearboxes.
“The 7.3-litre is designed for maximum durability in the harshest environments given that our customers live and work in these conditions every day,” said Joel Beltramo, Ford manager for gas V8 engines. “This engine has the largest displacement in its class and is designed to provide benefits in key areas like power, durability, ease of maintenance, and total operating costs.”
The new Windsor, ON–built 7.3L V8 will arrive first in the F-250 and F-350 models and will join the existing 6.2L. A 350 hp version will arrive later for the F-450 chassis cab and heavier-duty models as well as in the E-Series vans.
Another announcement for commercial customers, Ford says they're upping the PTO capability of the Class 3–5 chassis cab trucks. Get the 6.7L diesel and the stationary power takeoff allows for 300 lb-ft, 50 more than any competitor, Ford says.
The 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty pickups also get a refresh that includes some styling changes and more trailer tow tech. They're expected at dealers this fall.
